Seminar on Groundwater Management,
9 March 2000, Zaragosa. The meeting was attended by Prof. M. Scoullos
where he contributed his expertise. It was organised by the
Mediterranean Water Network and it aimed to implement the decisions
taken during the 2nd General Assembly of the Mediterranean Water
Network in Malta where groundwater resources were identified as a main
priority area.
2. The Second
World Water Forum and Ministerial Conference, 17-22 March
2000, the Hague. The Chairman contributed to the many sessions of the
meeting.

Euro-Mediterranean Conference on the Promotion of Women in Economic
Development, Friday 24 and Saturday 25 March 2000,
Brussels. The meeting was attended by Vanya Walker-Leigh who was
invited as an expert. This initiative had been co-sponsored by
Portugal, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Tunisia and Cyprus and
organised by the Association A.I.M. (Actions in the Mediterranean)
under the auspices of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Louis
Michel.
4. Strategic
Challenges for Sustainable European Tourism in the XXI Century,
13-14 April 2000, Porto, Portugal. The meeting was organised by the
EEB and the Federation of Portuguese Associations for the Protection
of the Environment. Mr. E. Constantianos made a presentation on the
overall MIO-ECSDE viewpoint and action in the field, using the
experience gained through the SUDECIR Rhodes Case study. He
disseminated, among other things, the SUDECIR Rhodes Case Study
publication and the "$ per ticket" sticker and postcards.

5. Euro-Med
Free Trade Zone: Can it be sustainable? April 17 2000,
European Parliament, Brussels. The meeting is organised by Friends of
the Earth Middle East and Friends of the Earth Europe in cooperation
with Global Legislators Organisation for a balanced Environment
(GLOBE) EU, Friends of the Earth's Mednet Programme and the Centre for
International Environmental Law. The objectives are to raise awareness
on the potential environmental implications of EU-South Mediterranean
trade liberalisation and to underline the necessity of conducting
sustainability impact assessments of trade agreements and the MFTZ in
particular; to present and discuss policy recommendations resulting
from the SIA and other studies. MIO-ECSDE was represented by Vanya
Walker-Leigh.

International Millennium Children's Conference (Eastbourne,
England, May 22-24, 2000). MIO-ECSDE was represented by two children
at the conference.
7. Seminar on
Public Access to Environmental Information, Athens, Greece,
5-7 June 2000, organised by OECD-Working Party on Environmental
Performance, and hosted by the Hellenic Ministry for Environment,
Physical Planning and Public Works. Ms. Bessie Mantzara represented
MIO-ECSDE.

June 2000. The Chairman represented MIO-ECSDE.
9. SMAP
Correspondents Meeting (Brussels, 13-14 June 2000). Ms. A.
Roniotes attended on behalf of MIO-ECSDE.

Environmental Week at EXPO 2000, Hanover. Board member Mr.
Pepe Abeledo attended the meeting representing MIO-ECSDE.
11. Meeting
with Environment Commissioner Margot Walström (16 October
2000). The Chairman attended the meeting and spoke on behalf of MIO-ECSDE.

Information, Awareness and Participation in the Arab Countries,
21-23 October 2000, Cairo, Egypt. MIO-ECSDE was represented by its
Chairman Mr. Youssef Nouri.
13. A
Sustainable Development Strategy for the EU, 17-18 November
2000, Stockholm Sweden. This high level working conference was
organised by the EEB and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation
with the support of the Swedish Ministry of the Environment and the
Chairman of MIO-ECSDE participated.

International Conference on Environmental Strategy Consultation in the
MENA and Gulf Regions, 19-21 November 2000, Amman. Jordan.
The meeting was organised by the World Bank Middle East and North
Africa Region and was attended by staff member V. Constantianos.

International Meeting of Experts in Environmental Education,
17-24 November 2000, Santiago de Compostela. The meeting was organized
by UNESCO in collaboration with Xunta de Galicia. The Chairman
contributed his expertise. · Green Week 2001: 'pre-session' with
European environmental NGOs and Networks, 9 December 2000, Brussels.
Staff member Anastasia Roniotes attended the session and proposed
possible collaboration of MIO-ECSDE with DG ENV for the Green Week
event.
16. Meeting of
Mediterranean Member NGOs of the EEB, 31 November 2000,
Brussels. The meeting was attended by the Chairman.
17. Green Week
2001: 'pre-session' with European environmental NGOs and Networks,
9 December 2000, Brussels. Staff member Anastasia Roniotes attended
the session and proposed possible collaboration of MIO-ECSDE with DG
ENV for the Green Week event.
