The review of the Coastal Area Management Programmes (CAMPs) of MAP/UNEP

The Coastal Area Management Programs (CAMPs) of MAP/UNEP were reviewed by all parties concerned, in Cairo, 1-2 June 1998. MIO-ECSDE has a keen interest on Integrated Coastal Management and was represented in the meeting by its Co-Chairman, Dr. Emad Adly.

NGO Consultation Meeting organised by the EIB, 9/6/1998, Luxemburg

MIO-ECSDE was represented at this Meeting by its Chairman, Prof. M.J. Scoullos and by its Executive Member Mr. Y. Nouri. A full report on the outcomes of the meeting will be included in issue No 10 of the «Sustainable Mediterranean».

European Conference on Environmental Education. Policies and their Implications for Sustainable Development, 8-10 / 6 / 1998, Benediktubeuern, Germany

This important Conference dealt with the following topics:

    • Environmental Education policy is specific EU member states
    • Transformation of classic environmental education into education for environment and sustainability (EfES) in the four basic sectors of sustainable development
    • Suggestions of EU and UNESCO for EfES
    • Concrete examples of EfES policies
    • Perspectives for the future of EfES

MIO-ECSDE participated actively in the Conference, by its representative Ms Athena Veneti, who presented the outcomes of the International Conference: «Environment and Society: Education and Public Awareness for Sustainability» held in Thessaloniki, 8-12/12/97.

    • European Network of Volunteers for the Environment and HeritageEuropean Network of Volunteers for the Environment and Heritage. A project launched by the Non Governmental Association Grouping of the European Campuses, with the support of DGXXII of the EC. The objective is to enable young people of 18-25 years of age, having completed or coming to the end of their studies, to put into practice their skills in a project of collective interest responding to the needs of local communities in Europe. In this way, these future professionals will acquire a real experience on the ground which will help them in their search for a job and at the same time, give them the opportunity to travel and discover another country of Europe.     • ZAMaN, A mounthly news magazine

ZAMaN is the name of a new magazine that was launched in April 1998, in Arabic language after studying the humanitarian, environmental, cultural, economic, scientific and social needs of the Palestinian community.

The magazine will deal with: a) The Human Being. b) The Environment. c) World Culture. d) World Economy. e) Health & Science. f) Social Issues. g) The Arts. h) Consumer reports.

Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtle (MEDASSET)

During this year (1998) MEDASSET is involved in the following projects:

  1. Field assessment of soft shelled brackish water turtle population in Dalyan Delta, Turkey, July 1998.
  2. Support for an assessment of marine turtle nesting activity on the Libyan coast (Phase II) with UNEP/RAC/SPA, WWF Int., the Libyan Marine Research Centre and the Libyan Technical Centre for Environment Protection
  3. Support for Telemetric Monitoring Project of the Glasgow University Marine Turtle Research Group, on Green Turtles from the north-eastern Cyprus nesting beaches.
  4. A mobile Exhibition of sea turtle conservation posters throughout the Mediterranean countries for education and public awareness, in collaboration with UNEP/RAC/SPA
  5. «EuroTurtle» A Mediterranean sea turtle biology and conservation web site for science and education, in co-operation with Exeter University and the biology department of King’s College, Taunton
  6. A four year campaign, started in 1997, on «The impact of ‘Small Garbage’ on the Marine Environment», for the United Nations «International Year of the Oceans»

Hellenic Association of Educators for Environmental Education (HAEEE)

HEAAA is presently involved in a project entitled "Developing Network for Environmental Education in Europe-D.N.E.E.E." in the framework of the European Program SOCRATES- COMENIUS 3.1 of the Commission of the European Union.

The project DNEEE is supported by the European Commission in the Framework of Comenius, Action 3.1 and from the HAEEE. Its aim is to equip the educators for developing Networks on Environmental Education in Europe. The project has 3 years duration. During the first year three meetings are planed. The first meeting of the working group of the project already took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, 7-10/12/1997. The Agenda of the meeting was: 1) Design of a pilot project on environmental education. 2) Preparation and schedule for the next two meetings. 3) Decide the goals of the 1998 summer seminar for educators, in each country. 4) Discussion on the next year's proposal to the DG XXII, in order to continue the project. The participants were informed about the regulation of funding from the European Commission and about recent developments related with the above project.

The partners presented a review of the present status of Environmental Education in their own country’s educational system and demonstrated examples of good practices of E.E.

In general, the partners have to: organise seminars in order to develop a European dimension in Environmental Education among the educators, identify and formulate the initial priorities for developing Environmental Education projects amongst European countries. Promote and analyse the notion that European countries have common environmental problems, create communication links and exchange positive and negative experiences in Environmental Education, organise seminars and in service training activities, in order to facilitate the development and participation of students in regional, national and international networks in each European country.

Association Liban Nature Envirronement (LINE)

LINE and the Mediterranean Centre of Environment (CME), with the support and collaboration of DGXII of the EC, the Ministries of Environment of Lebanon and France, the Mouhafazat of Mount-Lebanon and the Municipality of Mery Ain Saade, have organised a Workshop entitled «Environmental Communication Among the NGOs of Mount-Lebanon», 22-31/5/98, Maison de l’ Environnement et Developpement Durable Au Mont - Liban. Preparatory workshops took place dealing with issues such as Management of resources, Reforestation, Recycling of domestic wastes etc. In their framework, plans of action and communication were defined for immediate usage by local actors. 25 associations participated discussed case- studies and elaborated plans of environmental communication.

May’s Workshop took place in the perspective of Local Agenda 21.

Now LINE with the Governorat of Mount-Lebanon are planning to establish a Green Plan inspired by Local Agenda 21 to help the newly elected Municipality’s Council in Mount - Lebanon.
