| MIO-ECSDE Secretariat News
i) News from
the Second Meeting of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development
The second meeting of the MCSD took place in Palma de Majorca,
6-8 May 1997. The meeting reviewed the progress made until now in the preparation of the
priority themes for immediate action and of the mid term action themes. It is reminded
that MIO together with CREE are task managers for the mid term action theme “Information,
Awareness and Participation” and with general agreement Environmental Education was
included in the title. A background document was prepared and circulated on the matter and
two meetings of the theme’s Working Group were organised. Given the fact that the
Participation - Information issue cuts across all other issues, MIO and CREE have decided
to provide to all the other working groups an early input, if possible within 1997. At the
same time all other working groups were invited to contribute to the work of this group.
If any MIO members have papers or positions on participation etc. please send them to MIO
Secretariat to be used.
ii) MIO’s Case study in Rhodes Island (Greece)
on Sustainable Tourism Development
In the framework of the EU DGXII supported
programme SUDECIR, MIO continues to work, together with three other European institutes,
on the theoretical concept through which regional key-sectors can firstly be identified
and further-on be developed in a sustainable way. MIO is particularly focusing on the
sector of tourism and on a case study conducted in the island of Rhodes. The study will
contribute to the formulation of a Sustainable Tourism Development Plan for the island,
taking into account physicochemical characteristics such as the carrying capacity, water
availability etc. but also the expectations of the local communities. The ways to reach a
consensus between the regional stakeholders for the approval and implementation of the
plan is a central issue of the case study.
iii) EU call for proposals in the field of
cooperation with Third Countries
There is presently a EU call for proposals for
RTD activities under the specific programme for research and technological development,
including demonstration in the field of cooperation with third countries and international
organisations (1994 to 1998). The Mediterranean Region is listed as one of the priority
areas, and policy research concerning water use is given as one of the region’s
priorities. Submission deadline 11 September 1997. (Information: European Commission, rue

Kefalonian (Greece) Marine Turtle Project (U.K.)
The Kefalonian Marine Turtle Project works on the research and the
conservation of the marine turtle Caretta caretta population of Kefalonia island
(Greece). The group is associated with MEDASSET. Every year, from May to October,
volunteers come to the project field and work closely with members of the local
communities, monitoring to obtain scientific data, informing on turtles both residents of
Kefalonia and international visitors, preparing and presenting scientific data that
supports conservation arguments, etc. More specifically the project wants to encourage:
the involvement of Greek Universities and NGOs in the scientific research, carefully
controlled ‘eco-tourism’, the set-up of local enterprises that capitalise upon the
marketing potential of turtle related souvenirs, the establishment of a ‘Turtle
Information Centre’ that could serve as a basis for talks and beach visits.
