MIO-ECSDE Secretariat News

i) Second Meeting of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD)

The second MCSD meeting will take place in Palma de Majorca, 6-8 May 1997. Among the items included in the agenda is the presentation of the preliminary reports of the medium term themes of the MCSD. MIO-ECSDE and CREE (Centre des Regions Euro-Mediterraneennes pour l’ Environnement) will present the preliminary report of the theme “Information, Awareness and Participation”, to which they are task managers.

ii) MIO-ECSDE Executive Bureau Meeting

The next Executive Bureau Meeting of MIO-ECSDE (the 4th under MIO-ECSDE’s new federation status) will take place in Palma de Majorca, Spain, on the 9th and possibly 10th of May 1997. The site of the meeting was decided bearing in mind that some of the Executive Bureau members will already be in Palma de Majorca for the 2nd MCSD meeting.

iii) UNESCO International Conference: “Environment and Society: Education and Public Awareness for Sustainability”, 8-12 December 1997, Thessaloniki (Greece)

This International Conference is co-organised by UNESCO and the Greek Government and is going to take place in Thessaloniki, the Cultural Capital of Europe for 1997. Co-ordinator of the Conference’s Organizing Committee is Prof. M. Scoullos, Chairman of MIO-ECSDE. The Conference is expected to attract participants from all over the world since it will be the last major UN Conference of the 20th Century.


MIO-ECSDE Publications

We would like to inform our member organisations that they will soon receive the new publications of MIO-ECSDE (Profile Leaflet, “Agreed Positions of the Mediterranean Environmental Organisations”, “Re-orienting Environmental Education for Sustainable Development”).

Members’ Activities News

Association Liban Nature Environnement (LI.N.E.):

  1. Environmental Education: LI.N.E. will coordinate, at national level, the presentations for the International Forum on Environmental Education PLANET’ERE, to be held in Quebec, Canada, in November.
  2. ECOLOBUS: LI.N.E. plans to start the operation of an ECOLOBUS (a big bus (moving)- ecological library) meant to facilitate the sensitisation and the dialogue with NGOs, Municipalities, Universities and mainly schools.
  3. Youth WORKCAMP of Volunteers for the Protection of Nature: LI.N.E. will organise its 3rd Workcamp in August 1997, with principle objective the creation of a agro-biodiversity garden of 19 species of Lebanon fig trees.
  4. University Activities: LI.N.E. will host, for a 5-6 month period academics doing a study in subjects proposed by LI.N.E. such as landscape painting, soil utilisation, agriculture, water management.

Legambiente has informed us about the 3rd CLEAN UP THE MED campaign, which will take place throughout the Mediterranean, with the support of organisations and countries, on the 23-24-25 of May 1997.
