Sustainable Development
On 16-18 December 1996 the first meeting of the MCSD
was held in Rabat, Morocco. MIO-ECSDE was represented by its Chairman Prof. Michael J.
Scoullos. Mr. Rafael Madueno and Mr Youssef Nouri, both members of the MIO-ECSDE Executive
Bureau also attended the meeting. A full report will be included in the forthcoming issue
of “Sustainable Mediterranean”.
ii) UNESCO International Conference on Education for
Sustainable Development
Greece is going to be the host of the UNESCO
International Conference on Environmental Education towards Sustainable Development to be
held in Thessaloniki, this year’s Cultural Capital of Europe, in December 1997. The
Conference is of particular significance since it will take place 20 years after the First
International Conference of UNESCO-UNEP for Environmental Education in Tbilisi and 5 years
after the Rio UNCED Conference.

the first two responses.
A. MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to
Save the Sea Turtles) working mainly in the following three projects:
1. EUROTURTLE: Europe’s first Educational and
Research Database for the Conservation of Mediterranean Sea Turtles. To find Euroturtle on

2. Campaign to Save Pakara (Turkey), to Save the
Akamas National Park (Cyprus), to Save Mounda Beach (Kefalonia-Greece), to Save the Sea
Turtles in Zakynthos (Greece), to Save Dalyan (Turkey).
3. Campaign: The Impact of Small Waste Garbage on
Marine Wildlife.
B. EcoPeace (Middle East Environmental NGO
Forum) working mainly in the following three projects:
1. Gulf of Aqaba Sustainable Tourism: Creation of
local community based groups or task forces to promote sustainable tourism in the Gulf of
Aqabe region.
2. Dead Sea Review and Strategic Planning: Two
public hearings have already taken place in Amman and Tel-Aviv. Implementation of the
recommendations adapted there will now be sought.
3. Internet Training: three day training courses for
the NGO environmental community.
