"Proceedings of the Cairo International Conference and Exhibition - Municipal Solid Waste Management in the Mediterranean & Arab Region"

The International Conference and Exhibition on Municipal Solid Waste Management in the Mediterranean and Arab Region, which was held under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Atef Ebeid the Prime Minister lasted for three days and dealt with one of the most serious problems that confront us in the Mediterranean and Arab Region. The Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED), the Mediterranean Information Office for the Environment. Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) and Envirotech-Middle East worked together to organize the conference with the support of AOYE, and a large number of donors and sponsors: EC DG ENV, UNDP'LIFE Program, UNEP West Asia. USAID. DANIDA. Japanese Embassy, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Semiramis Intercontinental. Xerox, Proctor and Gamble and AI-Fardouss International. The invitation was not confined to governmental organizations, private organizations, or municipalities, but was extended to experts as well. The conference was attended by 243 participants from 31 countries.

Through 8 sessions and about 40 papers presented from all corners of the world, the conference aimed to cover issues related to Solid Waste Management in the Mediterranean and Arab Region. Issues that were dealt with were: strategies; appropriate technologies; innovative approaches and institutional arrangements; business opportunities and job creation: and partnership, participation and communication.

The conference was considered as a part of a continuous movement because the solid waste problem is ever increasing.  It should be noted however, that some addresses and interventions may have not been included for technical reasons and any omissions or inaccuracies were not intentional.
