Summary of MIO-ECSDE Activities - Products (2001)

Following up he activities of 200, 2001 was a year that combined both action in specific thematic areas and background work in the fields MIO-ECSDE wants to be particularly active in till 2003 and in the future. Important activities which result to tangible results, but also project proposals, information collection, contacts and lobby, alongside the (co)organisation of important meetings of varying scale have absorbed a considerable portion of the human and financial resources of MIO-ECSDE.

During 2001 it became clear that apart from MIO-ECSDE being internationally recognised as being the most significant Mediterranean Federation of Environmental, Cultural and Development NGOs it has also been recognised as a key player in bringing together other than NGO Mediterranean Stakeholders on issues crucial for the Sustainable future of the region. Governments and Intergovernmental organisation frequently invite MIO-ECSDE to participate actively as a partner in their initiatives.

MIO-ECSDE followed closely the works of all main Mediterranean and International conventions and processes and its representatives participate4d actively and with concrete proposals in virtually all the important Mediterranean perspective in international and global initiatives.

Of significant importance was MIO-ECSDE's work in:

Supporting policies, awareness raising and preparing for the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) both in terms of assuring the Mediterranean interests are well integrated ion the process and securing the NGO input.
Securing the Mediterranean Dimension in International Policies and Processes, especially at EU level.
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), where it has managed as the NGO partner of GWP-Med (former MED TAC) to pave the way towards Kyoto 2003 and promote the EU Water Framework Directive as a proper response to IWRM.
Promoting Education for Environment and Sustainability, Public Awareness, Public Participation and Access to Information in the region and in Mediterranean countries.
Promotion of the Cultural dimension for the Sustainable Development of the region.

The already well established networking activities of MIO-ECSDE were continued. A variety of information on Mediterranean issues, projects' call for tender, announcement of conferences, MIO-ECSDE publications, etc., were circulated to the Members of the Federation, as well as to the network subscribers. The MIO-ECSDE web-site has been considerably upgraded throughout 2001 and is frequently updated with all the latest news concerning MIO-ECSDE, issues of interest for its members and the Mediterranean scene in general.

1. Activities related to networking - Exchange of information and strengthening of co-operation among NGOs

Continuation and Enhancement of Networking Activities:

MIO-ECSDE contribution in important Networks and institutes.
Networking with the members and its wider NGO network.
Exchange and dissemination of Information through:
1. The "MIO-ECSDE internal bulletin".
2. The Newsletter "Sustainable Mediterranean".
3. Functioning of the MIO-ECSDE library.
4. Other Activities related to Exchange of Information and Networking.
Strengthening the cooperation and promoting the "team-spirit" among NGOs
Organisation of a joint residential workshop on the Promotion of Multilateral Mediterranean co-operation on issues related to Education for Environment and Sustainability (Athens, 5-6 June 2001)
Collaboration with the membership and other actors within the Mediterranean on the MIO-ECSDE Priority Issues
Working towards EU enlargement
Capacity building
Collaboration with key International Organisations and Existing Networks.

2. Activities related to the Continuation and enhancement of MIO-ECSDE's role as a promoter of common NGO policies and collective voice of Mediterranean Environment and Development NGOs at international fora, conventions etc. and through the organisation of meetings, joint activities, etc.

Monitoring of and Contribution to the formulation of Policies Relevant to the Mediterranean Region and Involvement in Important Mediterranean Processes.
