Events and Scope

Through the global 'Vision to Action' process which led to the formulation of the GWP input to the 2nd World Water Forum, The Hague, 2000, GWP-Med (MEDTAC at that time) elaborated the Framework for Action for the Mediterranean: Achieving the Vision for the Mediterranean (FFA).

The FFA, prepared by the Mediterranean Water Network (MWN) with contribution from a group of experts, aims to offer a framework action programme for achieving a "sustainable" scenario for water in the Mediterranean until 2025. As part of that, three sub-regional FFAs were prepared for: the North of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Islands of the Mediterranean, as well as, four country reports (for Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria). Through that process, three GWP-Med Sub-Regional Working Groups of Experts were formed.

The Experts Workshop will address as its main themes the :

  • alternative water resources in Mediterranean Islands
  • impact of tourism on water resources, with emphasis in Mediterranean islands

The scope of the Experts Workshop is :

  • to identify and discuss the necessary steps for concrete IWRM policies in Mediterranean islands and mainly actions on the specific themes to be promoted, enriching the relevant material of the Sub-Regional FFA
  • to identify ways to effectively assist the Mediterranean governments on the workshops themes
  • to continue and expand the work of the GWP-Med Sub-Regional Working Group on Mediterranean Islands
  • to use the outcomes as background material for the eventual drafting of a regional AP

The participants of the Workshop are Mediterranean experts on the themes addressed. The Workshop will be convened in English.

For the best preparation of the contribution of each participant, a set of matrices - tables have been prepared. They concern good (or "best") practices on technologies, financial and other instruments and institutional administrative frameworks for the use of alternative water resources in islands, in general, and in tourist installations, in particular.

Each participant is expected to contribute by filling part of these matrices using his won experience or experience from his/her country which could be shared during the discussions.

The Experts Workshop is organised by MIO-ECSDE and MWN.

Exhibition on Water in the Mediterranean

As part of the GWP-Med Work Programme 2001, MIO-ECSDE has undertaken to prepare and present a Mobile Exhibition on Water in the Mediterranean. The Exhibition consists of 10 large posters on selected issues (eg. general water data for the region, water cycle, water supply and demand, water sectors - agriculture, industry, IWRM concept and applications, GWP-Med structure). The Exhibition will be combined with the poster session and general exhibition in the framework of a major Conference on "Chemistry and Water Resources" organized by the Greek and Cyprus Chemist Unions, the University of Cyprus and the University of Crete.

Moreover, the 'Educational Kit on Water in the Mediterranean' will be demonstrated. The Kit is addressing the High School level and contains practical exercises for pupils, illustrative material and a guide for the teacher. In parallel, working groups of specialized educators have been formed in seven Mediterranean countries (Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey). The project is supported by the: GWP, Greek Government, Commission of the European Union and UNEP/MAP.

The Exhibition is organised by MIO-ECSDE and the Federation of the Environmental NGOs of Cyprus and is supported partly by the Water Supply & Sewerage Corporation of Athens (EYDAP).
